THE BANNER PROJECT
Fowler High School
The Everson Museum of Art
Syracuse,
NY
Fall 2001/Spring 2002
This project is the result of
years of work with The Everson Museum of Art, The
New York Council of the Arts and G. W. Fowler High
School
which emphasized the study and creation of art through
the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts.
Students
were recommended for this program by Fowler Art teachers
or counselors based on their previous success in the
arts. During the course of their advanced art classes
taught by Cheryl Molesky, students discussed contemporary
art and current social issues in order to plan and
produce a public artwork. The students worked with
Ann Clarke as artist in residence throughout the research
and creation process. The teens decided to reflect
on their understanding of social issues that affect
them and their school, visually, in the form of twenty
foot by three-foot banners that will hang outside the
school. These banners, visually accessible to the public,
share their sense of place and identity within the
community.
